Content Marketing for Startups: Make One Useful Piece
Plan a piece of content that answers a real customer question and has a distribution route.
What you will learn
Start with a question people ask
Choose a question you found in interviews, search suggestions, support requests or a relevant community. Check the intent: someone seeking a definition may not be ready to buy. Help them with the job they actually came to do.
Add evidence or a working example
An original example, checklist, comparison or measured result can make content worth reading. Explain limitations and show the steps. Rewriting generic advice adds little value.
Plan distribution before production
Decide where the right people could discover it and how it connects to your offer. Repurpose a useful idea into a short post or demo without publishing the same message indiscriminately. SEO is a longer-term channel, not an instant traffic promise.
An example
Write “Five invoice fields to check before month-end” with a small downloadable checklist and one worked example. Share it where the question was asked, if permitted, and invite readers to try a sample report.
The trap to avoid
Large traffic with no connection to your customer’s problem can be expensive to produce and commercially irrelevant.
Try it: the exercise
Answer these three prompts. In the Equip learning desk your answers are saved in your browser, with a checklist to review them.
- The customer questionWhere did you find it, and what is the reader trying to do?
- Outline and original valueWrite three points plus an example, evidence or useful checklist.
- Distribution and next stepName one suitable channel and a relevant action for the reader.
A good answer has
- A real reader question
- Original practical value
- A distribution plan
Check yourself
Which content idea is most directly useful for an invoice-checking service?
- A generic list of inspirational founder quotes.
- A sensational unrelated trend.
- A worked checklist for the customer’s month-end invoice review.
Answer: C. The checklist addresses a relevant job and lets the reader experience your expertise.
A beginner tutorial ranks well but attracts no qualified leads. What should you examine?
- Whether reader intent connects to your product and next step.
- Only the font size.
- How to add more unrelated keywords.
Answer: A. Search traffic and commercial fit are different. Investigate audience intent and the transition to your offer.
